Calvin Kruk, Mayor of Dawson Creek, accepts a LiveSmart BC Green Cities Award from Premier Gordon Campbell and Minister of Community Development Blair Lekstrom.

City of Dawson Creek - WINNER

Notable highlights since last year, when the city was awarded the 2007 Green City Award in this category, include:

  • phase II – community-wide component of the Community Energy Plan near completion. This plan followed the same process used for calculating municipal-wide operations impact. A series of recommended actions will form the basis for ongoing energy work for 2008;
  • completion of Phase II of the Sustainability Planning Project. Phase II developed a ‘sustainability baseline’ which identified all of the City’s current initiatives and how they were or were not contributing to overall sustainability and identified ten key categories in which the city should be moving forward. The city is currently moving forward with Phase III which includes plans to address gaps in the 10 sustainability areas identified to date;
  • addition of solar hot water systems on the RCMP building, airport, public works yard and Sudeten Hall; and
  • completion of the green buildings policy which includes strategies to reduce energy use, ensure green procurement, and improve health.

CITY OF WHITE ROCK

Notable highlights of their nomination include:

  • a number of initiatives that promote active living, including: the Pedometer Challenge, Grade 5 Active Pass, Employee Wellness Program, Spirit of BC activities, Walk White Rock, Passport Program and the BC Road to Health Community Tour;
  • the city has a Leisure Services Master Plan with the goal of having a 20 per cent increase in activity levels of those less physically active and 20 per cent more citizens make physical activity part of their daily life by 2010; and
  • work on achieving high density infill developments.

CITY OF LANGFORD

Notable highlights of their nomination include:

  • an affordable housing, parks and amenity contribution policy which addresses affordable housing in the community;
  • a Downtown Revitalization Plan which promotes investment in city streetscape and encourages multifamily development in the downtown core;
  • a Recreation 2010 program which includes $15 million invested in recreation over the next three years; and
  • the Westhills Green Community Master Plan. This proposed low-impact, greenfield development has not yet been built.
